Best Free QR Code and Barcode Tools That Run in Your Browser

What to look for in a free, browser-based code tool, and the features that separate a good one from a data-harvesting one.

Free does not always mean private

Plenty of free generators are free because your data is the product. Before you trust one, look at where the work happens. If the marketing emphasises dashboards, scan analytics and editable codes, there is a server in the loop recording activity.

A genuinely private tool says the opposite: codes are generated on your device, nothing is uploaded.

Features worth having

  • Local generation with no account required.
  • Multiple QR content types: URL, WiFi, vCard, SMS, location.
  • A range of barcode formats with format-aware validation.
  • PNG and SVG export, plus batch from CSV.
  • Live preview and contrast warnings.

Red flags

Be wary of tools that require sign-up to download, that watermark exports unless you pay, or that quietly convert your "free" static code into a redirect you do not control. A code that stops working when a trial ends was never really yours.

Export quality

For anything printed, SVG export is non-negotiable. It keeps codes crisp at any size. A tool that only offers low-resolution PNGs will let you down at the printer.

Bottom line

The best free tool is one that does the encoding in your browser, supports the formats you actually use, and never asks for an account to hand you your own code.
